November is just around the corner, and I have a sneaking suspicion that you’ve been looking online for fun homeschool holiday activities to do with your kids.
And if you're anything like me, you've probably felt that internal tug-of-war between wanting to keep up with some sort of “structured learning” and just leaning into the magic (and chaos) of the season.
Here’s the thing: it’s okay to do less.
In fact, doing less can actually be a wonderful approach to homeschooling through the holidays.
First off, let’s address the holiday-themed busywork.
You know, those cute little worksheets with Christmas trees or turkeys plastered all over them.
Now, don't get me wrong; if your kids genuinely enjoy them, go for it!
But don’t feel like you have to squeeze in a full curriculum of holiday-themed activities just because it's the holidays.
Those crafts and worksheets can start to feel more like checking boxes than meaningful learning.
Instead, let’s embrace the learning that happens in real-life moments.
Cooking a big meal? That’s math, science, and life skills all rolled into one! Measuring ingredients, setting timers, following recipes—it’s practical, hands-on, and honestly, way more memorable than a worksheet.
Plus, cooking and baking give kids that immediate, tangible result they crave: the satisfaction of creating something they can actually eat (or share with family and friends).
And then there’s shopping, budgeting, and all the planning that goes into holiday preparations.
Bring your kids into that process! Let them help make a list of what you need, compare prices, talk about why you choose one thing over another, and set a budget.
It’s a chance for them to see how you make decisions, prioritize, and navigate choices in the real world. And let’s be real—it’s a skill they’ll need for the rest of their lives.
Decorating the house, writing cards, wrapping presents—it all counts.
Every part of it offers a chance for creativity, fine motor skills, and even a bit of design thinking. Even the quiet moments, like reading together by the tree or talking about family traditions, can become meaningful “lessons.”
It’s okay to let homeschooling during the holidays look more like life and less like school.
Ultimately, it’s about embracing the rhythm of the season and recognizing that learning doesn’t stop just because we’re not sitting down with a workbook.
So, give yourself permission to breathe, to enjoy, and to let go of the pressure to “do it all.”
You’re still homeschooling, even if it looks a little different in November and December.
Trust me, your kids will remember these experiences far more than another worksheet or unit study.
They’ll remember the smell of cookies baking, the warmth of wrapping gifts, and the laughter that fills the house. That’s the kind of education that sticks.
Take care of yourself this season, too. You’re doing enough. You are enough.
