We’ve made it—the holidays are here.
If you’re anything like me, this time of year feels like a mix of joy, exhaustion, and a little bit of now what?
The holiday season can be such a whirlwind.
We pour so much energy into making it magical for our families, and when it’s over, the temptation is to jump straight into New Year goals and resolutions.
But let me offer an alternative: take it slow.
Reflecting instead of rushing
I like to think of this week as a time to pause. To look back on the season—not just at what went right, but how it felt.
Did you enjoy it?
Were there moments of peace and connection, or did it feel too rushed?
What would you do differently next year?
This isn’t about judgment or regret. It’s about noticing.
When we reflect, we can carry what worked into the new year and gently let go of what didn’t.
Giving yourself a transition period
Here’s something I’ve learned: you don’t have to flip a switch at midnight on December 31st.
The Western New Year comes in fast, and the pressure to “start fresh” with big goals and big energy can feel… heavy.
Instead, I give myself a transition period—a gentle in-between where I rest, reflect, and ease into the new year.
I use the time between the Western New Year and the Lunar New Year (late January) to settle in, slowly set intentions, and choose my word of the year.
It’s a practice that works for me.
Instead of rushing into January 1st with a mile-long list of changes, I step into the new year with clarity and calm.
Choosing a word of the year
If you’ve never tried it, choosing a word of the year can be such a grounding practice.
Instead of rigid resolutions, you pick a word to guide you—a focus for how you want to feel or live in the year ahead.
Some years, my word has been simplify. Other years, it’s been calm or joy.
This year, I’m still reflecting on it, and I’ll take my time until it feels right.
If you want to try this, ask yourself:
• What do I need more of in my life right now?
• How do I want to feel in the year ahead?
• What’s one word that can gently guide me forward?
Let’s take it slow
So this is my invitation to you: take it slow.
Let this be a season of easing out of the holidays and gently transitioning into the new year.
Rest, reflect, and give yourself space to dream about what comes next—without pressure or urgency.
